In Science Life, Matt Wood addresses the true efficacy of prebiotics and probiotics in his article "Do Probiotics Work?". Prebiotics are the fuel for probiotics to work. Probiotics are the gut bacteria that help us digest our food. What companies advertise as probiotics in their food may not be as effective as they make it appear. If the bacteria is from the right strain it provides benefits especially for people with IBS or IBD.
If I could ask the author two questions I would ask about the mood benefits of taking probiotics. I think the link between emotional and physical is something that needs more exploration and I have seen many mood supplements that are for mood boosting. My second question would be, Is eating yogurt beneficial? In the article, he talks about the bacteria that yogurt has and how some die from the acidic stomach. So if the correct yogurt is eaten can there be the same benefits as a pill of probiotics.
